Suzanne Williams - Artist Statement May 2011.

Currently, I’m working to express a personal response to events and feelings of change and movement. I begin with digital photography, recording myself in the midst of motion. A series of self-portraits capture my head moving, pushing  through space. The photographs are works in themselves, the tones and distorted shapes revealed are exciting and evocative. These images inspire me to develop a process led way of working between different art media and techniques. I want to explore any relationships which emerge by progressing from one discipline to another.
I make drawings and paintings in orthodox art materials from the original photographic images. Some media convey the expression of movement well, particularly the smudges of pastel and the flow of watercolour. From photographs and observation, I transfer these works into three dimensional wire sculptures. Larger, more successful structures begin to evolve. I start to include non-traditional media and found-objects. By translating some of these forms into video pieces I am able to create and reveal new ranges of motion. I make additional two dimensional drawings based on stills taken from these moving images. A large number of the studies are lined based but I’m drawn to using the blocks of the different shapes  created as a result of the processes and experimenting with the colours evident in the works, to interpret movement more effectively.
In my more recent works, the figurative aspects in the images appear less obvious and more abstract compositions can be observed. My subject area widens to include landscape inspired work, in an extended landscape format. The process of mark making and constructions which "grow" by chance associations of materials used become a prominent feature. This gives the resulting “static” art works a greater impact and intensity.
I plan to continue with the subject of movement and change, but may choose to create a less process led series of works. Always aiming to extend my knowledge of working with wide range of art media and techniques, I am interested in the prospect of making more three dimensional work, influenced by the rhythmic movement of my two sons' most recent original music compositions.
